Elizabeth Stanton: Question 1

As we have discussed in class, our government was built upon equality. The Declaration of Independence begins off by expressing the rights that every person is entitled to. According to Elizabeth Stanton women were not given the same rights as men, because of the power men had over women. She gives a list of the many things that women were not allowed to do. Stanton says that men did not give women the right to vote. She also says that men have given women laws that they were to submit to, but could not help produce these laws. Men also have oppressed women on both sides. This means that women have no right to any property event the money that they earn. The men also only acknowledge the women when it is profitable to them. Men also denied women the chance to have a good education. Their position in church always had to be one that was under a man. She believed that all of the power was in the hands of men.
I know that no country in history has had the perfect government. Every government has gone through some changes. It is so interesting that we were supposed to be a country that believed in equality of all people, but we tried to oppress our own people. Women should not have to fight for rights that were supposed to be given to everyone. The reason we have a Constitution is to have laws that everyone can abide by. Our country has come a long way. We are still not completely a country that is built on equality, but we are working on it.
