Nussbaum

Martha Nussbaum says that human functional capabilities define a life of a human being. She listed things that all humans should be capable of. If these capabilities were infringed on by the government than this was unjust. Some of them include: life, bodily health and integrity, emotions, practical reason, and control over one’s environment. These capabilities represent social justice, because everyone is entitled to these. When a person is not capable of these things than they are not being treated equally. This is unjust. There is another way that you can look at this. If the capability given is infringing on the capability of another person, than this is unjust. Everyone is given the right to life. When this capability is taken away, this is unjust. Some may feel that they infringed upon this right for their own safety. This is infringing on the rights of others. I agree with Martha Nussbaum’s theories. If it is set in stone that everyone is entitled to these rights there will be no conspiracy of what is just. That is just what Nussbaum does by listing the central human functional capabilities. She believes that if anyone’s life does not have any of these capabilities than it is not a good human life. Everyone is entitled to the pursuit of happiness and these capabilities represent a life full of happiness. When everyone is given the same rights there is a higher probability that everyone is going to be treated equal. This ensures justice for all people.
